The union announced that “around 30 Intercity trains were halted during the strike period,” a situation they believe “could have been avoided if the administration had shown genuine willingness to address the identified issues.”
“The SFRCI reaffirms its responsible and good-faith trade union stance over the past 27 months, in contrast to the CP administration’s non-compliance and lack of dialogue,” it stated.
The union cited the main reasons for the strike as the “breach of the agreement reached on July 25, 2023, particularly regarding the humanization of service schedules,” in addition to what it considers “serious” safety issues, such as “trains being longer than the platforms, making boarding and disembarking safely difficult, and overcrowding, forcing passengers to travel standing, even on Intercity services.”
The organization also criticizes the “late response to defects reported by inspectors, especially in carriages operating on Intercity trains.”
At the start of the strike, CP assured that it “fully complies with the labor agreement” made with the union and denied any safety lapses, insisting that “all maintenance interventions are carried out according to the Maintenance Manual.”
The union disputes the operator’s claim of compliance with the schedules agreement, stating that “this does not reflect reality.”
Furthermore, CP “guarantees not to compromise customer safety, yet continues to operate trains longer than station platforms” and “asserts it meets scheduled maintenance plans, which is not under dispute,” it highlighted.
For the union, “the issue is the delay in addressing unforeseen faults, which remain unrepaired in a timely manner.”
“CP has said nothing about the Intercity train overcrowding, which for us is a tacit admission of the veracity of the complaint” and “mentions hiring 28 inspectors in 2025 but omits how many have retired, moved to other categories, or stopped working due to occupational illnesses.”
“The Board of Directors claims to be open to dialogue with the SFRCI, yet ignores the meeting request submitted on August 27, 2025, to which they have not yet responded,” it concluded.
