Strike in Lisbon Metro “will not impact the usual service”

A strike organized by the Federation of Transport and Communications Unions (Fectrans) is underway, aimed at demanding better wages and working conditions, such as an increase in lunch allowances and a decrease in the workweek to 35 hours.

“The Lisbon Metro clarifies that the strike called for overtime and special event work, starting at 00:00 on May 23, 2025, and lasting 30 days, renewable for similar periods, will not impact the regular transport service,” the company stated in a communiqué.

The assurances from the Lisbon Metro came after the union warned of potential disruptions due to the strike, which could affect the upcoming Saturday, notably during the final of the Women’s Champions League, and the Festas de Lisboa occurring throughout June.

“For the Women’s Champions League final, scheduled for next Saturday, May 24, the Lisbon Metro will make every effort to enhance the service on its network, aiming to adjust supply to demand levels, within existing technical and operational limits,” the company remarked.

Concerning this event, hosted at the Estádio José de Alvalade, the Lisbon Metro advised that attendees should travel to the venue “ahead of time throughout the day, avoiding peak periods.”

Regarding the Festas dos Santos Populares, the company did not specify whether there would be an increase in service provision.

The Lisbon Metro operates daily across four lines: Yellow (Rato-Odivelas), Green (Telheiras-Cais do Sodré), Blue (Reboleira-Santa Apolónia), and Red (Aeroporto-São Sebastião).

Typically, the metro runs from 06:30 AM to 01:00 AM.
