Portugal’s mainland is under a yellow alert this Tuesday due to maritime agitation, with damages reported in several areas, particularly in Costa da Caparica, where strong waves have damaged beach facilities.
A widely shared video on social media shows the moment when, with high tide, the sea invades the beach area, toppling straw umbrellas, and dragging chairs, a wooden stall, and other items present at the location.
The footage also shows two people who managed to remain unharmed despite the force of the sea.
The video can be viewed in the gallery above.
A beach bar in Póvoa de Varzim, Porto district, also sustained damage to its wooden terrace due to the strong waves experienced overnight. Located on Lagoa beach in the parish of Aver-o-Mar, the structure suffered significant damage to the terrace and some decorative objects and furniture.

Due to the maritime agitation, the districts of Porto, Faro, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga have been under a yellow warning from 06:00 today until 06:00 on Wednesday.
The yellow warning, the least severe, is issued when there is a risk situation for certain activities dependent on the weather conditions.
On Monday, the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) explained that waves up to four meters high were expected on the west coast this Tuesday, potentially reaching a maximum height of up to seven meters, a situation uncommon in August, resulting from the position of post-tropical cyclone ERIN.
Following the worsening maritime conditions, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) and the National Maritime Authority (AMN) warned the public, advising preventive measures.
The AMN urged beachgoers to be cautious when visiting beaches, frequent monitored beaches, respect beach and flag signals, follow lifeguards’ instructions, continuously watch children, and avoid positioning themselves under cliffs.
