Strong wind destroyed part of the roof of the Elvas pool complex.

A statement by the City Council of Elvas revealed that an “extreme wind phenomenon” impacted a local sports and leisure facility, resulting in its temporary closure. The council noted that the meteorological event damaged the roof by tearing off a part of it. The infrastructure will be reopened to the public once all safety conditions are assured.

Between midnight and 8 a.m. today, the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) recorded 43 incidents linked to the effects of Storm Nuria, predominantly involving fallen trees and road clearances.

Portugal has been experiencing the effects of Storm Nuria since Thursday, necessitating warnings about strong winds, rain, and maritime disturbances.

In a statement, Paulo Santos from ANEPC confirmed there were no reports of casualties, major accidents, or road closures, and identified the Setúbal Peninsula as the most affected area. “The night was relatively normal considering expectations. We encountered 43 occurrences, mainly in the Setúbal Peninsula with 11, followed by seven in Greater Lisbon, seven in Faro, four in the Coimbra region, and the rest in other areas,” he explained.

Due to the forecasted severe weather, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) issued a yellow warning for the districts of Faro, Setúbal, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, and Coimbra (until 3 p.m. today) due to strong south/southeast winds, with gusts reaching up to 80 km/h, particularly along the coast.

The IPMA also placed all 18 continental districts under a yellow warning for occasionally heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms.

Additionally, the districts of Setúbal, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, and Faro are under a yellow warning until the end of today due to the forecasted strong maritime disturbances, with southwest waves expected to reach 4 to 4.5 meters.

The archipelago of Madeira is also being affected by Storm Nuria, leading the IPMA to issue a yellow wind warning for today, predicting gusts up to 120 km/h in mountainous regions and expecting rain.

The yellow warning, the least severe on a scale of three, is issued when there is a potential risk to certain activities dependent on weather conditions.
