Students threaten to stop schools in November for the end of fossil fuels by 2030

Students have announced a march to the government headquarters on October 10, issuing a “final warning” that the government must ensure a habitable planet.

“If by November they do not commit to ending fossil fuels by 2030, students will halt their schools in the week of November 17 to 22”, the movement warns in a statement.

Last year, dozens of students from various educational levels, from elementary to university, delivered a letter to the Government headquarters demanding a plan to end fossil fuels by 2030.

In the letter, which has been signed by more than 1,500 students to date, they warn that their future “is not for sale.”

“We need to do something, we have no choice. We just want the possibility of a fair and secure future,” states Catarina Bio, a Law student, quoted in a movement’s statement.

“The government knows it is condemning my generation to death if it does not ensure a transition before it’s too late. Yet, it continues to sell my future to fill the pockets of the fossil industry. We need to say that our future is not for sale!” the student warns.

Fernanda, one of the high school students who delivered the letter to the Government, notes that they have attempted everything, but the Government continues to “ignore the greatest crisis humanity has ever faced.”

“This summer, climate change killed at least 16,000 people in Europe, and the Government only makes plans to worsen the situation. We live in fear that one day it could be us or someone in our family,” the student laments.

During the May election campaign, several students held protests to warn parties that, should they wish to form a government, they must assure a plan for securing their future.

On election night, students protested in front of the hotel where AD celebrated its victory, warning that they would halt schools this semester if their future was not assured.
