A resolution published in the Diário da República outlines that the Air Force is to conduct necessary studies regarding the chosen location, infrastructures, equipment, and other essential requirements for the establishment and operation of a new shooting range. These studies are to be submitted to the Government via the member responsible for national defense by December 31, 2025.
For this purpose, the Government authorizes the Air Force to spend up to one million euros, excluding value-added tax (VAT).
According to the Council of Ministers’ statement from July 10, the Government mandates the preparation of required studies to reorganize the airspace around the new airport and future shooting range to facilitate and reconcile military and civil aviation operations.
This will be a collaborative process involving relevant entities, including the Air Force, NAV Portugal, the National Aeronautical Authority, and ANAC (the National Civil Aviation Authority).
Additionally, a resolution has been published today authorizing the Air Force to invest up to 30 million euros to relocate the Figo Maduro Military Aerodrome (AT1) to the Montijo Air Base, as part of the plan to expand Humberto Delgado Airport’s capacity.
The transfer of AT1 operations is expected to be completed by the end of 2028.
