The NRP Arpão returns to the Alfeite Naval Base in Lisbon on Wednesday, June 19.
The Portuguese submarine NRP Arpão returns to the Alfeite Naval Base in Lisbon on Wednesday, June 19, after more than two months on a mission in the North Atlantic, as part of NATO’s Operation Brilliant Shield and Operation Arctic 2024.
According to the Portuguese Navy, in a statement to which Notícias ao Minuto had access, the ceremony will be presided over by the Minister of National Defense, Nuno Melo, and will be attended by the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo, the Operational Commander of the Armed Forces, Vice Admiral Nobre de Sousa, among other entities.
It should be remembered that, in the first phase, the submarine took part in Operation Brilliant Shield, a NATO military operation taking place in the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean, in the North Sea, with the main objective of promoting surveillance and ensuring the security of the area of Alliance responsibility, with a special focus on tracking non-NATO military platforms, both surface and submarine, which usually operate in this area.
In the last phase, on April 28, the submarine carried out Operation Arctic 2024, “which was a milestone in history, as it was the first conventional submarine to sail and operate under the Arctic ice, representing an achievement for the Portuguese Navy”, with the support of the counterpart navies of Canada, Denmark and the United States, the note reads.
The NRP Arpão is commanded by Commander Taveira Pinto and has a garrison of 34 military personnel on board.
