Subsidies in twelfths? Government wants workers to choose

“Each worker should again have the prerogative to choose how they prefer their bonuses (13th and 14th months) to be paid: entirely at two points of the year or in twelfths, distributed across the 12 months of the year,” the document states.

With the aim of “valuing work and employment and combating poverty,” the government led by Luís Montenegro also establishes other measures, foreseeing, namely, the advancement of a work incentive provision.

The purpose of this provision is to allow for the “accumulation of work income with social supports,” with the objective of encouraging “active participation in the labor market.”

“It would replace a wide range of social supports, without losses for anyone, by a remunerative supplement, accumulative with work income, RSI, social pension, or other social supports directed at extreme social situations, which alleviates the impoverishment of employed workers and encourages their active participation in the labor market, taking into account the size and composition of the household,” details the government in its program.

Among six measures related to the appreciation of the labor market is the revision of the social protection regime in the event of unemployment, “to make it fairer and more transparent, encouraging quick reentry into the labor market.”

The Program of the XXV Constitutional Government, arising from the legislative elections of May 18 won by the AD (PSD/CDS) coalition, was delivered today at the Assembly of the Republic by the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Carlos Abreu Amorim.

The government program was approved by the Council of Ministers on Thursday and will be debated in the Assembly of the Republic on Tuesday and Wednesday.

In the press conference following the government meeting, the Minister of the Presidency, António Leitão Amaro, described the document as “an ambitious program to transform the country,” structured into 10 priority axes, including state reform, regulated immigration, income increase, proximity security, housing, or defense.

The PCP has already announced that it will present a motion for rejection, but the initiative of the communists is certain to fail, as, in addition to the PSD and CDS, it will not have the support of Chega or the PS.
