With the arrival of summer, a new analysis by DECO PROteste has focused on products commonly used during this season.
This seasonal analysis is released weekly, similar to the examination of a basket of 63 essential items that the consumer protection association has been monitoring for years.
In this ‘special’ analysis, which includes products like pork cutlets, salad tomatoes, and virgin olive oil, some items have become more expensive week by week.
In the latest analysis conducted from July 2 to July 9, the big ‘winner’ is the mackerel, which saw a price increase of 24.17%. On July 2, the price per kilogram was 3.99 euros, but by Wednesday, July 9, it had risen to 4.95 euros (a difference of 96 cents per kilogram).
Also notable were items like ground roasted coffee, which last week cost 3.99 euros and now stands at 4.86 euros (a price variation of 21.84%).
In third place is curly lettuce, which saw a price increase of 20.15% from the previous week, now costing 2.52 euros.
Next is red potatoes: previously costing 1.26 €/kg, they now stand at 1.38 €/kg, representing a 9.52% increase (or a difference of 12 cents).
If opting for curly lettuce already made a summer salad more expensive, there’s more: salad tomatoes also saw a price hike over the past week, costing six cents more per kilogram, now priced at 2.17 euros per kilogram.
Finally, gilt-head bream saw the most modest increase, now costing 8.94 €/kg, up from 8.86 €/kg just a few days ago.
This special basket, according to the analysis, costs 50.22€ this week, marking the highest value in the past year.
Here, you can see how other products have become cheaper. Spoiler: One item retained the same price from one week to the next.
And the usual basket?
Regarding the basket of 63 essential items monitored by the consumer protection association, another analysis indicates it is “on an upward trajectory.”
“In the last week, the basket of 63 essential food items monitored by DECO PROteste since 2022 saw a price increase of 74 cents (up 0.31%) to 240.12 euros”, as noted in the release.
In the last week, the products that saw the most significant price increases on this list, also between July 2 and July 9, were ground roasted coffee, mackerel (24%), curly lettuce (20%), and fish sticks (18%).
Since DECO PROteste started this analysis on January 5, 2022, “the largest percentage increases have been in beef for boiling (97%), eggs (75%), and tomato pulp (70%).”
