Support for the 2024 fires is “almost all resolved”

The Minister of Economy and Territorial Cohesion, Manuel Castro Almeida, stated today in parliament that the financial aid provided for the 2024 wildfires is “almost completely resolved,” with only a few cases pending due to disputes over the amounts involved.

Manuel Castro Almeida noted that regarding aid to farmers for damages up to 6,000 euros, a total of 5,075 supports have been granted, with 30 cases “pending” due to “a dispute over the amount in question.”

The minister also highlighted that for damages concerning primary residences, there are 75 requests for assistance, with three cases still needing contracts.

“Here, too, it is due to a lack of response from the private side,” he stated.

In the case of factories and businesses, the minister mentioned that there are 50 requests, with three cases pending from companies that were insured. He emphasized that two of these cases “will be resolved this week,” leaving “only one case pending.”

“As the deputies can imagine, when there is one pending case, two pending cases, 30 cases out of five thousand, it is not due to negligence by the services. It is because there are disputes, confrontations. These are difficult situations,” he added.

The 2024 rural fires resulted in a burnt area of 136,424 hectares, mostly consumed by the fires in September.

According to the resolution of the Council of Ministers that determines the territorial scope of the support to be provided following the fires, there were more than 60 eligible municipalities for aid requests.
