Supreme Court rules that Novo Banco’s collective dismissal in 2016 was illegal

The Supreme Court of Justice has confirmed the illegality of the collective dismissal that Novo Banco made in 2016, according to the ruling to which Lusa had access.

The more than 200-page judgment states that the bank failed to demonstrate causality between the financial reasons invoked and the need for the dismissal, with the judges considering that the dismissal “is therefore not justified”.

In 2016, Novo Banco made a collective redundancy of 56 workers, which was challenged in court by several employees.

The coordinator of Novo Banco’s Workers’ Committee, Rui Geraldes, told Lusa that the bank will now have to make payments to the workers who brought the case, of which there are nine according to the ruling. Novo Banco’s CT has always said that this was an illegal dismissal.

Today, in a statement, the National Union of Bank Managers and Technicians considered that “this is a fair decision for the workers and of extreme legal and judicial relevance, as far as Novo Banco and the entire banking sector are concerned”.
