The Public Security Police (PSP) announced that a 55-year-old suspect was intercepted in the early hours of Wednesday during a road safety operation in São João da Madeira.
Following a breathalyzer test that indicated levels consistent with driving under the influence of alcohol, the suspect requested a blood test for confirmation and was transported to the Entre o Douro e Vouga Health Unit in Santa Maria.
During the journey, the suspect repeatedly attempted to remove his seatbelt, compelling the driver of the police vehicle to stop. The suspect used the stop to attempt an escape but was apprehended by officers about 20 meters from the vehicle.
“During the police intervention, the suspect actively resisted, assaulting one of the officers. This behavior necessitated the proportional and strictly necessary use of force to ensure detention,” the statement explained. It was noted that the detained individual and one of the involved officers required immediate hospital care.
The suspect was detained for committing a crime against Public Authority (assault against a law enforcement officer) and was subsequently presented to the Judicial Authority at the Santa Maria da Feira Court. The case has been referred to the Public Prosecutor’s Office for investigation.
