The Judiciary Police announced that they have detained the suspected arsonist in the southern division of their investigation unit after gathering significant evidence.
The individual is accused of deliberately setting a fire using a lighter on uncultivated rural land with herbaceous vegetation located at Colina do Carmo, one of the city’s districts, as stated by the police.
The blaze consumed an area of four hectares but was detected early by a firefighter. The swift response of Beja firefighters prevented it from spreading further.
According to law enforcement, the firefighters promptly extinguished the fire, eliminating the threat it posed to nearby scattered residences.
A police source confirmed today that the alleged arsonist was taken into custody on Wednesday in Beja.
The suspect is scheduled to appear before the competent judicial authorities at the Beja Court for an initial judicial interrogation and to determine the necessary legal measures.
The investigation is overseen by the Beja Public Prosecutor’s Office.
