“The suspect, acting in a spiral of violence and having committed a similar arson on November 27, returned to his ex-partner’s residence where, using a lighter, he set fire to the curtains and sofa, which quickly spread to all remaining furnishings, causing extensive damage with the risk of the fire spreading to the entire structure,” stated the PJ in a communiqué.
According to the PJ, the damages caused by the fire set on Friday in the parish of Vila Meã, Vila Nova de Cerveira (district of Viana do Castelo), “did not reach greater proportions due to the immediate intervention of neighbors and local firefighters who subsequently extinguished the flames.”
“After the act, the suspect fled to an unknown location,” added the PJ.
The police believe the detainee “acted out of revenge, aware that his conduct was prohibited and that the result of his actions would be the destruction of the property and its contents.”
The actions conducted by the PJ “allowed the collection of solid evidence and led to the arrest of the suspect” through the Braga Criminal Investigation Department.
