The Braga Judicial Police (PJ) reported that forest fires were detected in the parish of Vila Chã (Santiago), in the district of Viana do Castelo, on June 19 and 29. These incidents occurred on remote forest paths, some distance from residential areas.
Witnesses noted, “a motorcycle was observed in the area, and fires were immediately spotted along its route, expanding rapidly into the forested area.”
The PJ identified the motorcycle’s driver and conducted investigations that gathered substantial evidence pointing to the suspect’s involvement.
The fires occurred at three locations, each susceptible to widespread forest damage, posing significant risk to nearby housing clusters.
The rural area, bordering the Peneda-Gerês National Park and known for its steep terrain, is recognized for its biodiversity.
Both firefighters and locals swiftly extinguished the fires after early detection, preventing further spread.
The suspect is scheduled to appear before the judicial authority for an initial hearing and determination of preventive measures.
