The PJ announced on Thursday that a man suspected of attempting to murder a 28-year-old in Barreiro, Setúbal, has been located and detained. The attacker reportedly chose his victim at random.
Investigations revealed that the 36-year-old Portuguese national stabbed a 28-year-old man on September 11 after they traveled together by boat from Terreiro do Paço, Lisbon, to Barreiro, during which they had no interaction.
At the Barreiro ferry terminal, after disembarking, the suspect followed the victim and stabbed him in the neck with a knife, immediately fleeing the scene.
The victim received immediate medical attention and was transported to a hospital.
The suspect was later apprehended in Moita by PSP officers, initially detained only for possessing a prohibited weapon, which was later identified as the weapon used in the attempted murder.
Though identified and released with a notice to appear in court the next day, the suspect reportedly fled to Spain.
During the PJ’s investigations, it was discovered that the suspect made daily boat trips between Lisbon and Barreiro, during which he randomly attacked other victims, sometimes using the knife seized by authorities.
The suspect, with no prior criminal record in Portugal, returned to the country and was arrested. He is now in preventive detention following his first judicial interrogation.
