Suspect of killing homeless person hid in cave. Remained in custody.

The third suspect in the murder of a homeless man on the island of São Miguel has been apprehended while hiding in a cave along the coastal area of Ponta Delgada, according to the Polícia Judiciária (PJ). The police also informed that the individual has been remanded in custody.

In an official statement, the PJ specified that the suspect “was hiding in a cave along the coastal shore of Ponta Delgada, where he was captured.”

It is noteworthy that the other two suspects, aged 41 and 45, were arrested on April 17 and were both subsequently remanded in custody.

The crime took place in the city of Ponta Delgada on the morning of April 16, with the victim being 40 years old.

On the night before the crime, the victim and the three attackers “were inside a space not open to the public, illegally occupied by homeless individuals, where they consumed synthetic substances.”

“During their interactions, the aggressors developed the perception that the victim intended to appropriate possessions belonging to them, leading to a coordinated act of aggression,” the authorities noted.

“Armed with blunt and cutting tools,” the suspects “inflicted lethal injuries to the victim’s torso, ultimately causing his death.”

The PJ further disclosed, “The detainee was presented today to the competent judicial authority, and the coercive measure of remand in custody was applied.”
