The Évora Regional Public Prosecutor’s Office announced in an online statement that a judge imposed a preventive internment measure on Thursday, following the questioning of the defendant.
This judicial inquiry, explained by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, took place after the accusation against the defendant was filed on the 1st of this month, along with a request for tougher coercive measures from the Public Prosecutor.
The suspect, whose date of detention has not been specified, is accused of committing aggravated domestic violence against his mother, as per the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
“The incidents occurred in Montemor-o-Novo, at the residence where both cohabited, between early 2023 and July 2025,” it stated.
Referring to the indictment, the Public Prosecutor emphasized, “the accused inflicted both physical and psychological mistreatment on the victim, causing physical injuries and compromising her mental integrity.”
“The defendant suffers from mental health issues and is accused as a dangerous non-imputable, which could lead to the application of a security measure upon conviction,” it noted.
During this interrogation, the Public Prosecutor found “the risks of hindering the investigation or continuity of criminal activity,” hence the proposal of a coercive measure of preventive internment in a psychiatric hospital facility, which the judge agreed to.
The investigation took place in the Section of the Department of Investigation and Penal Action (DIAP) of Montemor-o-Novo, with assistance from the GNR.
The statement also mentioned the period for request for opening the instruction is ongoing; if not requested, the process will proceed to trial.
“The victim was given a special protection measure [pre-recorded statement] during the investigation phase by a judge, typically eliminating the need for her testimony during trial,” the statement added.
