Suspect of mistreating woman in Montemor-o-Novo prohibited from contacting her

The Public Prosecutor’s Office of Évora, in a statement published on its website, announced that following the issuance of detention warrants outside of a flagrant crime, the Public Prosecutor presented the defendant for a preliminary judicial interrogation today, indicted for domestic violence.

The suspect was detained on Thursday, outside of a flagrant crime, in the municipality of Montemor-o-Novo, Évora district, according to the GNR.

Both the victim and the defendant are of Portuguese nationality, as stated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The Public Prosecutor further indicated that there is strong evidence that “during the relationship — initially dating (started in 1999/2000) and then marriage since 2009 — the defendant physically and psychologically abused the victim.”

“These behaviors intensified in recent days following their separation and were committed in the presence of their daughters, currently 13 and 8 years old, which led to his detention,” added the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The facts occurred in the area of Montemor-o-Novo, according to the Ministry.

The Public Prosecutor also noted that after conducting the interrogation and “considering the risks of continued criminal activity and disruption of the investigation, the Public Prosecutor promoted the imposition of non-custodial coercive measures, which the criminal instruction judge agreed to.”

The suspect, as per the Public Prosecutor, is prohibited from contacting the victim directly or indirectly by any means, with remote monitoring, and a protection distance fixed at 500 meters, except for contacts under parental responsibility regulation.

The coercive measures also include the prohibition from staying at the victim’s residence and workplace, a ban on acquiring, possessing, and using weapons, and the obligation to undergo a domestic violence program, to be specified by the Directorate-General for Reintegration and Prison Services (DGRSP).

The investigation continues under the direction of the Department of Investigation and Penal Action (DIAP) of Montemor-o-Novo with the assistance of the GNR’s Special Victims Support Investigation Unit (NIAVE).
