Suspect of violating students in Vila Real placed under house arrest

After being detained by the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) in Vila Real, the suspect was brought before a judicial hearing on Friday.

The Vila Real Court deemed there is “strong evidence” indicating the defendant’s involvement in two counts of rape against two young women aged 18 and 19. It also found “significant risks of continued criminal activity, severe disturbance of public order and tranquility, and disruption of the inquiry or the investigation process.”

As a result, the young man is subject to coercive measures, including house arrest with electronic monitoring and a prohibition on contacting the victims by any means.

Until the residence is verified for house arrest suitability, the suspect remains in pre-trial detention.

This information was released by the Public Prosecutor’s Office via the official website of the Procuradoria-Geral Regional do Porto (PGRP).

On Friday, the PJ’s Vila Real Criminal Investigation Department stated that the crimes took place between July and October, involving two young female students as victims.

The police further explained that the rapes occurred in “areas of Vila Real city following nighttime leisure activities.”
