The suspect involved in the fatal hit-and-run of a 52-year-old woman in Vila Franca do Campo, located on the island of São Miguel in the Azores, remains at large following the incident last Saturday.
According to local reports, the Public Security Police (PSP) have yet to identify the suspect, who fled the scene immediately after the accident.
While the exact circumstances of the hit-and-run have not been officially determined, early indications suggest that the driver was speeding at the time of the incident.
Eurico Machado of the PSP assured the regional television channel that “as this is a serious crime, the investigation is ongoing” until they fully understand “what actually happened.”
Authorities classify this crime as negligent homicide, which could carry a sentence of up to five years in actual imprisonment.
The accident occurred directly in front of the victim’s home at approximately 9 a.m. on Saturday. The woman was transported by firefighters to the Divino Espírito Santo Hospital in Ponta Delgada but ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
