The Judicial Police (PJ) arrested a 48-year-old man suspected of being the recipient of an illicit package from Peru containing around two kilos of hallucinogenic products.
In a statement, the PJ said that the suspect, a foreign national who was not in Portugal, was arrested on Saturday on arrival at Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto.
According to the Judiciary, the package, which arrived in Portugal in mid-March, was described as containing a natural pigment for painting.
The package aroused the suspicions of the customs authorities at Oporto airport, who passed the case on to the PJ, which is responsible for investigating these situations.
“The imported product was eventually identified as Dimethyltryptamine, a product of plant origin, commonly known as DMT, with strong psychoactive effects, extracted from the leaves of certain plants found mostly in Central and South American countries,” the same statement said.
Presented for questioning, the detainee was ordered to pay bail and was forbidden to have contact with the other suspects.
