Suspension of metrobus works is a “step in the right direction”

“The O Porto Somos Nós candidacy would like to congratulate the new administration of Metro do Porto, which now inherits a challenge we know it will honor responsibly. The halt in these works is a step in the right direction,” stated the candidacy led by Pedro Duarte in a note sent today.

Metro do Porto announced today it has decided to implement a “temporary technical pause” in the second phase of the metrobus construction, which began on September 22.

In a video posted on his Facebook page, Pedro Duarte stated that with the new administration of Metro, “common sense has prevailed,” noting that it is “finally free from socialist constraints.”

Emídio Gomes began his role on Wednesday as the president of the transport company, replacing Tiago Braga, who transitioned from the administration of Metro do Porto (where he had been since 2016) to the presidency in 2019, then appointed by the PS Government and whose term was renewed in 2022, scheduled to end at the end of 2024.

“At this moment, it has been decided that no more works or tree felling will occur until a new mayor is in office,” added the head of the PSD/CDS-PP/IL coalition list, who also stated that, if elected, he will collaborate with the new Metro do Porto administration to “find a landscape solution (…) that ensures green spaces, trees, and a smooth, lightweight public transport that is compatible with the well-being of all Porto residents.”

The works for the second phase of the metrobus started on September 22, in the dedicated Bus corridor of Avenida da Boavista, on the section between Rua Jorge Reinel (near Colégio do Rosário) and Avenida do Dr. Antunes Guimarães, and have been subject to opposition.

The metrobus is expected to connect Casa da Música to Praça do Império (in 12 minutes) and to Anémona (in 17), with the service’s vehicles being hydrogen buses visually similar to conventional metro ones, built for 29.5 million euros, including the fueling infrastructure.

The vehicles have already arrived, and the first phase of the construction is complete, but the service is not yet operational, with the Avenida da Boavista channel currently used by users of smooth mobility modes such as bicycles and scooters.
