Sword from the statue of D. Afonso Henriques removed after piece disappears

The decision comes as a precautionary measure to safeguard the sculptural ensemble following the disappearance of a crucial piece that affects its stability and integrity, according to a joint statement by the Guimarães City Council and the Directorate of the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, Guimarães Castle, and the Church of St. Michael of the Castle (monuments under the jurisdiction of Museums and Monuments of Portugal, E.P.E).

Without specifying which piece disappeared, the entities add that the preventive removal of the sword will ensure the statue’s proper preservation while necessary technical procedures are underway.

The statement also notes that the case has been reported to the competent authorities, who are conducting appropriate investigations.

Contacted by Lusa, a police source mentioned that the missing piece was located near the hilt and provided stability to the sword.

The same source stated that the investigation has been transferred to the Judiciary Police, as it concerns a potential crime against cultural heritage.

The sculpture, created by Soares dos Reis, was inaugurated on September 20, 1887, by King D. Luís at the current Largo de São Francisco.
