Taking care of our elderly is a mission for everyone, and safety starts with information. In this context, the Public Security Police (PSP) reminded on Thursday, October 23, via social media, a list of recommendations to help prevent risks for the elderly.
The security force highlighted advice and self-protection behaviors for seniors to stay safe in their own homes.
Regarding safety advice, the PSP emphasized three key points: the need to “avoid loose or slippery rugs”, suggesting the use of “anti-slip tape” or removal; the importance of “keeping hallways and stairs well-lit with accessible switches”; and ensuring that “electrical cords or objects that could cause tripping are not left on the floor.”
The self-protection behaviors also included three ‘rules’ emphasized by the PSP.
These are:
- Always lock doors and windows even when at home;
- Do not open the door to strangers without confirming their identity;
- Be wary of those presenting themselves as company technicians (water, electricity, gas) without prior notice – always verify their identity with the company.”
The National Health Service (SNS) also offered advice this week on social media about reducing the risk of falls for the elderly.

The SNS stresses the importance of ensuring “good lighting in the house” and having “night lights.” Another tip is to prefer “non-slip flooring without loose rugs” and keep pathways within the home unobstructed. Stay informed on all the recommendations.
