“And it is this extremism we see when analyzing the constitutional revision project of the Liberal Initiative (IL), which includes measures like removing constitutional recognition of consumer rights, worker representation, the need for public radio and television services, and many other truly radical elements,” he criticized.
During a visit to the Barcelos Fair in the Braga district, the leader of the Livre party reiterated his criticism of the IL, a daily occurrence, asserting that the proposed changes are “truly radical” because they challenge consensuses untouched for 50 years in Portugal.
“We do not wish to retreat on the Welfare State, but we want to innovate in policies that truly bring wellbeing to people, improve quality of life, public transport, and access to education. Much remains to be done, and this need for action makes our economy and society more dynamic and generates more wealth,” he emphasized.
In his opinion, there has been an effort from a right-wing that is becoming more radical to caricature positions that are part of European heritage, such as having a Welfare State.
“Is having a Welfare State now considered radical? Only if you ask Rui Rocha,” he stated.
On Monday, the leader of the Liberal Initiative stated that, 51 years after April 25, it is necessary to revise the Constitution, arguing that it is time to remove the fundamental law’s reference to a “path towards a socialist society.”
The IL leader referred to the preamble of the Constitution of the Republic, in which it asserts the Constituent Assembly’s decision of the Portuguese people to “pave the way for a socialist society, respecting the will of the Portuguese people, aimed at building a freer, fairer, and more fraternal country.”
