Taxes (even for “baldness”) mark PS-IL, “convergence” in BE-PAN

The fourth day of parliamentary debates in the run-up to the May 18 legislative elections resumed this Thursday, once again featuring a dual format.

The Secretary-General of the Socialist Party (PS), Pedro Nuno Santos, squared off against Rui Rocha, the President of the Liberal Initiative (IL), in a confrontation highlighted by mutual accusations concerning tax policies. Rui Rocha criticized Pedro Nuno Santos, suggesting his perspective offered “a vision that the pie is small and remains so.” In response, the socialist leader mockingly remarked, “If you ask how to solve the problem of baldness in Portugal, IL would say with a tax reduction.”

This was followed by a debate between Mariana Mortágua, the coordinator of the Left Bloc (BE), and Inês Sousa Real, the spokesperson of PAN. Although these discussions revealed significant areas of agreement, they also highlighted notable differences. Both leaders concurred that Portugal faces “other challenges” beyond defense but diverged on issues like reducing corporate tax (IRC) and the youth income tax (IRS Jovem), among others.
