TC rejects Chega’s appeal of the decision that invalidated internal elections

The Constitutional Court has upheld the invalidation of Chega’s national leadership election at the party’s VI National Convention, which occurred from January 12 to 14, 2024. This decision followed a ruling from May, confirming the court’s previous stance.

Previously, in October, the court had already annulled the election of Chega’s national leadership at the penultimate convention held in Santarém in January 2023.

In a statement addressed to Lusa, party members Gregório Teixeira and Fernando Nóbrega emphasized the “serious illegality in which the party finds itself.”

Both members had previously filed actions contesting the election of Chega’s national and executive boards during the VI Convention.

Fernando Nóbrega was the first to see a court decision that invalidated the leadership election, while Gregório Teixeira subsequently withdrew his case.

The members expressed their frustration at witnessing, since 2019, “a repeated pattern of internal manipulation, lack of democratic oversight, and total control of the party by André Ventura, treating it as a personal and autocratic project.”

“With the judicial annulment of the 2024 elections, Chega lacks any valid governing bodies. Its current structure is null and non-existent in the eyes of the law. The only legally subsisting bodies are from the party’s founding in 2019, which are of a technical and provisional nature, and whose legitimacy has long expired,” they added.

The members also emphasized that this decision is final and cannot be appealed.
