“I don’t sell illusions. It’s not possible to solve this problem overnight. It is possible to reduce its impact. That’s what we’re doing,” said Luís Montenegro in statements to journalists.
For the head of the Government, “it is possible to take measures to try, still in time, to correct as many situations as possible.”
Because the executive took office in April, Montenegro recalled that his Government did not have the opportunity to intervene in the teacher placement system and that he is aware of the problem of having several parts of the territory that “are left without the necessary teacher coverage.”
Therefore, he emphasized, the Government is enhancing the teaching career so that more people are willing to become teachers and many do not abandon teaching for other activities.
“We are intervening to try to address the consequences of the previous process,” he said, recalling that a measure has already been taken to reinforce the subsidy for displaced teachers, particularly in access to housing.
He also spoke of another incentive, namely allowing teachers who can now apply to teach where placements were not filled to become permanent in those schools and “have an incentive of a bond that can be more attractive.”
