Teachers hope the next legislature will be a “turning point”

The union, part of the National Education Federation (FNE), has issued a statement underscoring the need to address injustices in the teaching profession.

“This is not merely a matter of professional justice; it is a demand for respect for all those who dedicate their lives to educating the new generations,” stated the president of SPZN and the secretary-general of FNE, in the announcement.

Pedro Barreiros emphasized, “Fully recognizing the teaching career ensures dignity, appreciation, and motivation for all those who, with commitment and dedication, shape the future of Portugal.”

With just over a month until the anticipated legislative elections on May 18, the union has launched a manifesto titled “for the full recognition of the teaching career and hope for justice for teachers and educators,” reviving a concept presented in the legislative elections of March 2024.

“Maria Esperança Portugal” was a fictional candidate created by the FNE for the last legislative elections to prompt political parties to discuss the education sector.

Now, the representatives of the teachers are rekindling this hope for the upcoming legislative term, which they describe as “a time of change” for the recognition of the profession.

“Hope is not resignation; it is the certainty that, together, we will do justice to the teaching career,” the manifesto states.
