
Maria José Duarte, chairwoman of the board of directors at Teatro Micaelense – Centro Cultural e de Congressos, aims to make March 31, 2026, the 75th anniversary of the institution, an “unforgettable historical milestone,” urging the people of São Miguel Island to positively respond to this call.
During a press conference unveiling the Teatro Micaelense program in Ponta Delgada through the end of the year, Duarte expressed the desire for an “exceptional increase” in sponsorships within the context of the 75th-anniversary celebrations, focusing on enhancing local culture.
She mentioned plans to “host high-quality and sophisticated events targeted at different age groups,” with “special involvement from local artists and cultural agents.”
“It will be a true celebration of local culture, highlighting our talented artists, composers, and cultural agents, especially during the March 31 performance, the highlight of the celebrations,” she stated.
The chairwoman emphasized that the administration’s goal has been to showcase and promote primarily local artists and cultural agents, a goal that will definitely be upheld during the most significant anniversary celebrations of Teatro Micaelense.
Meanwhile, the cultural program for the remaining months of the year at Teatro Micaelense includes performances by Carminho, the comedy festival Palcomédia VII, the Festival of Arts and Crafts of the Spectacle — POP, an Indian film showcase, and a circus matinee.
The lineup also features stand-up comedian Salvador Martinha, the play Honrar a Vida directed by Maria Amélia Lopes, as well as performances by the Bando – Núcleo de Artes Performativas, Brahms’ Waltzes with soprano Carolina Raposo, Comédia a la carte, Fadoalado, Coral de São José and the Azores Military Band.
The cultural agenda also includes performances by the Sinfonieta de Ponta Delgada and the Azores International Film Festival, along with an educational service aimed at younger audiences.
