Ten districts of the mainland under yellow warning due to maritime agitation

The districts of Porto, Faro, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga will be under a yellow warning from 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday until 12:00 a.m. on Wednesday due to maritime agitation, with northwestern waves expected to reach up to 4 meters.

The yellow warning, the least severe, is issued when there is a risk situation for certain activities dependent on weather conditions.

In a statement, IPMA explained that significant wave heights of up to four meters are expected on the western coast on Tuesday, potentially reaching a maximum height of up to seven meters.

“There are very high expected peak period values, between 15 to 20 seconds, which will result in very energetic waves with a high volume of water, significantly increasing the risk of strong rip currents along the coast,” stated IPMA.

According to the Institute, during the high tide period in the afternoon, combined with a predictably high tide amplitude, several beaches may have no available sand.

“Due to the northwesterly direction of the swell, the southern coast of the Algarve will not be as exposed to this situation, with southwestern waves expected to reach up to one meter,” IPMA added.

The swell will remain strong on the western coast throughout the week, with significant heights between two to three meters.

“This situation, while not unprecedented, is uncommon in July and August, so it is recommended to follow the warnings and comply with the recommendations suggested by the competent authorities,” stated the Institute, highlighting that the situation results from the positioning of post-tropical cyclone ERIN.
