Ten districts on the continent under yellow alert due to heavy rain

The districts of Viseu, Porto, Guarda, Santarém, Lisbon, Leiria, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Portalegre will be under alert from 00:00 to 15:00 on Saturday due to heavy rainfall.

The yellow alert, the least severe on a scale of three, is issued whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities dependent on weather conditions.

The weather in mainland Portugal, particularly in the northern and central regions, is being affected by the depression Benjamim.

The IPMA indicated that precipitation will be occasionally heavy, especially in Minho and Douro Litoral, and light in the southern region.

“In the coming days, the weather in the continent will continue to be characterized by a westerly flow, with the transport of an air mass with high water vapor content, which will lead to heavy and persistent rainfall, especially between Friday, the 24th, and Saturday, the 25th,” stated the IPMA.

The Central region is most likely to register higher precipitation totals during this period, with values between 50 and 100 millimeters, a situation that may extend to the Northern region.

On Sunday, an improvement in weather conditions is expected in the northern and central regions, but with the frontal system moving south, where the precipitation may temporarily become more intense until early afternoon.
