
Portugal ranks seventh in health expenditure within the European Union, with spending reaching 10% of its GDP, equivalent to 29 billion euros.
According to Eurostat data for 2023, Germany (528 billion euros), France (325 billion euros), Italy (179 billion euros), and Spain (138 billion euros) are the countries with the highest health expenditures.
Conversely, health care costs in 2023 accounted for less than 7.0% of GDP in four EU countries: Luxembourg and Romania (both at 5.7%), Hungary (6.4%), and Ireland (6.6%).
