The exhibition ‘Art is a Matter of Consciousness’ is inaugurated today.

The opening event, scheduled for 6:00 PM, coincides with the birthday of Julião Sarmento (1948-2021), who would have turned 77 today. It will feature the performance “Fonte de Chocolate” by artist Joana Bastos and a concert by Austrian composer Dorit Chrysler, a renowned theremin performer. This was announced by the event promoters in a statement.

The exhibition showcases works by Alejandro Cesarco, Alighiero Boetti, Céline Condorelli, Fernanda Fragateiro, Filipa César, Gabriel Kuri, Joana Bastos, Juan Araujo, Julião Sarmento, Komar & Melamid, and Yonamine and will be open for visits until February 15, 2026.

Inspired by a stamp created by Julião Sarmento with the inscription ‘Art is a Matter of Consciousness’, the project serves as a reflection on art as a space for thought and dialogue between artists, the public, and the museum space.

“More than a conventional exhibition, ‘Art is a Matter of Consciousness’ is a project presented as a living space for learning and reflection, inviting the exchange of ideas on contemporary art,” highlights the presentation text of the Julião Sarmento Pavilion.

The selected works open up to a parallel program inspired by the exhibition’s theme, unfolding into performances, workshops, talks, seminars, guided tours, and video screenings throughout the exhibition period.

For this exhibit, curator Sofía Hernández Chong Cuy, who possesses over 25 years of professional experience in the visual arts field, has brought together a selection of more than 30 works.

The exhibition’s public program aims to “establish a more fluid connection between artistic purpose, critical thought, and creative practice,” requiring prior registration and ticket purchase on the day of each session.

The exhibition can be visited at Gallery 2 of the Julião Sarmento Pavilion.
