The fatality resulting from an extreme wind phenomenon in Albufeira this Saturday is an 85-year-old woman of “British nationality” who was at the Albufeira Camping Park, it was revealed today.
In a press conference, the district commander of rescue operations in Faro stated that the phenomenon caused six casualties at the Camping Park, including one death, two serious injuries, and three minor injuries.
In a hotel unit in Albufeira, also affected by the phenomenon, which occurred late in the morning, there were reports of 23 minor injuries, four of whom were transported to the Hospital de Faro, it was added.
According to Carlos Raposa of the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM), among the 28 injured in total, there are six children, aged between two months and seven years, all classified as having minor injuries, and 23 adults, aged between 24 and 70 years.
Among the victims, there are people of Portuguese, British, and Spanish nationality, with most of the injuries related to trauma and multiple traumas.

According to the authorities, the seriously injured were taken to the Hospital de Faro.
According to Commander Vítor Vaz Pinto, regional head of Civil Protection in Algarve, the phenomenon that occurred in Albufeira caused “a considerable degree of destruction” in its path, causing damage at the camping park located at one of the main entrances of the city and at the Éden resort.

Meteorologist Paula Leitão from the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) clarified this Saturday that “it was clearly a tornado”. Analyzing images of the camping park, the expert pointed out that “there was a whirlwind in the sky, and clouds descended to the surface in a swirl, with many objects being projected,” stressing that “it was clearly a tornado”.

In the municipalities of Lagoa and Silves, a similar phenomenon was recorded, but caused by “distinct cells,” which left two people homeless, who were subsequently relocated by the Silves Municipal Civil Protection Service.
The district commander also highlighted the “degree of unpredictability and uncertainty” of these phenomena, noting that there were “convective cells with a lot of activity” that could affect the entire coast, making it impossible to determine when and where they will occur.
