Luís Montenegro spoke at the opening of the general debate on the proposed State Budget for 2026 (OE2026), taking place from today until Tuesday in the Assembleia da República.
In an initial intervention using 21 of the 70 minutes available to the Government for the first day of debate, Montenegro stated that “the margin for budgetary changes is evidently narrow, very narrow indeed.”
“This will require a high sense of responsibility from everyone in the assessment and decision-making of the Assembleia da República on this State Budget proposal,” he said, adding that the country is living “in an international context of uncertainty and insecurity.”
The prime minister argued that “there is only one alternative for the country’s stability, economic stability, financial stability, and political stability: to approve the State Budget for 2026.”
“We all know there’s much to do, but we have also all heard the firm and repeated voice of the Portuguese. The firm and repeated voice of the Portuguese said and says: let the government work. And I add: despite all differences, in democratic discussion, let everyone be part of the work for Portugal’s future,” he urged.
