“The government miscalculated the magnitude of these fires. While the planes, requested too late, had yet to arrive, military support was essential. The situation is brutal!
Enough of such inertia. Portugal deserves better. Serious prevention, arsonists in prison, and funds for support are imperative. Enough of such inoperance. Desperation from watching everything burn with no ability to intervene must end. There needs to be funding and a singular command voice to combat fires in Portugal.
Impunity and irresponsibility at any cost in a country that does not deserve what’s happening. Fires persist, and the disgust felt by all Portuguese continues to grow.
We deserved better. It seems we have a country defended by nothing. I live in a nation where everything happens, and nothing changes. Next summer will be just like this one.
I refuse to watch images of the fires for some peace of mind. I feel immense anger and helplessness to change this state of affairs, year after year, government after government.
It’s difficult to live and see people lose their belongings, die, and witness the hopeless struggle of the brave firefighters.
It’s hard to be Portuguese, to love this country and its people.
Portugal is a country of strange contradictions.
