The Secretary-General of the Socialist Party (PS), Pedro Nuno Santos, remarked on Friday that “the greatest danger facing the Portuguese people is a radical alliance between the AD and the IL”, in response to declarations by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro concerning the governance solution established in 2015.
“The greatest danger facing the Portuguese people is a radical alliance between the AD and the IL. That indeed is a real threat, which will attack pensions, our National Health Service (SNS), our welfare state. That is the true danger we must avoid because the welfare state is at stake with an AD and IL alliance,” the socialist leader stated during a campaign event in Chaves.
Pedro Nuno Santos further asserted that an understanding between the AD and the IL “represents the worst that could happen to us,” emphasizing that “it would be an assault on the welfare state, the pension system, the SNS, and this is also at risk, and we must prevent it.”
“The PS ensures stability. What we know is that someone with Luís Montenegro’s history will not be able to guarantee stability in the future, it is not possible. We must prevent the AD and IL from having any chance to govern this country,” he stressed.
On the same day, Luís Montenegro called for the mobilization of all those seeking stability, urging that “no one wakes up to a government they didn’t want“, as occurred a decade ago with some voters.
“If you have not decided yet, think about which vote guarantees you stability and the government you want, so that you don’t wake up on Monday with a government different from the one you desired, as happened 10 years ago,” he said, referring to the 2015 elections in which the PSD/CDS coalition won, but it was the PS that governed, with a left-wing agreement known as the Gerigonça.
