Temperatures nearing 40°C are expected across mainland Portugal, prompting a yellow warning on Saturday and Sunday. This rise in heat is a precursor to the weather forecast for the upcoming month, where conditions are anticipated to be even hotter.
The Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA) projects below-average precipitation from July 28 to August 25, at least in the first week, with above-normal temperatures throughout this period.
IPMA experts detail expected rainfall deficits for the first week (July 28 to August 3) ranging from -10 to -1 mm. For the subsequent weeks (August 4-10, August 11-17, and August 18-24), no statistically significant weather signals have been identified.
Regarding temperatures, the IPMA notes, “The average weekly temperature is predicted to be above normal for the entire territory in the first week (0.5 to 5°C) and in the second week (0.5 to 3°C), almost throughout the territory in the third week (0.5 to 3°C) and for the inland areas in the fourth week (0.5 to 1.5°C).”
And this weekend?
All districts of mainland Portugal will be under a yellow warning due to the forecast of hot weather.
The IPMA has issued a yellow warning for Évora, Faro, Setúbal, Santarém, Lisbon, Beja, and Portalegre from 9 a.m. Friday until midnight Monday and for the remaining continental districts from 9 a.m. Saturday until midnight Monday.
A yellow warning indicates a risk for certain activities sensitive to weather conditions.
The IPMA forecasts hot weather for the coming days across the continent, with temperatures exceeding the climatological average for this time of year.
This temperature increase is attributed to the intensification of a high-pressure system over the Azores and the establishment of a ridge associated with this system extending to the Bay of Biscay, promoting the transport of a dry continental air mass over the Iberian Peninsula.
The maximum temperature is expected to exceed 30 degrees Celsius in most of the mainland territory, potentially reaching 40 degrees in some areas, particularly the Alentejo, Tagus Valley, and Douro Valley.
Only some coastal western areas might experience temperatures below 30 degrees due to the maritime breeze, which will sometimes be moderate, especially in the afternoons.

All districts of mainland Portugal will be under a yellow warning this weekend due to the forecast of hot weather, according to the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA).

Civil Protection Issues Warning
This Friday, the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) cautioned that extensive burning and the use of brush cutters are prohibited in the coming days due to increased fire risk, particularly in the North, Center, and Algarve.
The rural fire risk will rise over the coming days, at least until the end of next week.

The National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) warned today that extensive burning and the use of brush cutters are prohibited in the coming days due to increased fire risk, particularly in the North, Center, and Algarve.
