The PSD will designate the candidate for president of the City Council, Carlos Moedas, along with the second, third, and sixth spots on their list, as well as positions from ninth to thirteenth, following the formal signing of an agreement today.
The CDS-PP, part of Moedas’s current municipal executive coalition with three councilors, will choose candidates for the fifth and seventh positions among the top eight. Meanwhile, the IL will nominate names for the fourth and eighth positions (the current Moedas-led executive has only seven).
The agreement specifies that the PSD will appoint the president of the Municipal Assembly, while the IL will select the second name, with the CDS-PP choosing the fourth member.
For Lisbon’s 24 parish councils, the PSD will name 15 presidents, the CDS six—a reduction of three from the previous agreement—and the IL will present three.
In the current term (2021-2025), Carlos Moedas governs Lisbon without an absolute majority after being elected by the “Novos Tempos” coalition—PSD/CDS-PP/MPT/PPM/Aliança—which secured seven mandates out of the 17 making up the executive.
Among these seven, three representatives were nominated by the CDS-PP—Filipe Anacoreta Correia (vice-president who already announced his resignation from the party), Diogo Moura, and Sofia Athayde—and the party also selected the lead for the Municipal Assembly.
On July 16, Carlos Moedas announced his candidacy “Por ti, Lisboa” as the lead candidate of the PSD/CDS-PP/IL coalition for the upcoming local elections, stating he is not running against anyone and emphasizing the choice between moderation and radicalism.
The candidates for the presidency of the Lisbon City Council in the October 12 local elections include Alexandra Leitão (PS/Livre/BE/PAN), Carlos Moedas (PSD/CDS-PP/IL), João Ferreira (CDU — PCP/PEV coalition), Ossanda Líber (Nova Direita), Bruno Mascarenhas (Chega), and José Almeida (Volt).
