The images of the “tragic” derailment of the Glória elevator in Lisbon

Today, Wednesday, September 3rd, was marked by a tragic accident involving the Glória funicular in Lisbon. The derailment resulted in 15 fatalities and 18 injuries.

Several images depict the aftermath of the accident. Despite the onset of nightfall, a large emergency response is evident on-site, with the presence of firefighters, police, and other security forces.

Photographs reveal that the Judicial Police (PJ) is at Calçada da Glória, the site of the incident.

The mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, described the derailment of the funicular as a “tragic moment” and “very hard” for the city, stating that “Lisbon is in mourning.”

The municipality declared three days of municipal mourning. The government declared a national day of mourning to be held on Thursday, September 4th.

This accident has also drawn international attention, with several foreign media outlets highlighting the tragedy that occurred in Portugal.

Marcelo calls for quick investigation into accident circumstances

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, lamented the accident involving the Glória funicular in Lisbon this Wednesday afternoon, stating that he “hopes the incident will be swiftly clarified by the competent authorities.”

“The President of the Republic deeply regrets the accident that occurred this afternoon with the Glória funicular in Lisbon, especially the fatalities and the seriously injured, as well as the several minor injuries,” reads a note shared on the Presidency’s website.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also expressed “his condolences and solidarity with the families affected by this tragedy and hopes that the incident will be swiftly clarified by the competent authorities.”

Public Prosecutor’s Office launches investigation

The Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into the derailment of the Glória funicular in Lisbon, which caused 15 deaths and 18 injuries, as is customary in such situations, indicated today by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR).

“As is customary in these types of situations and as determined by law, the Public Prosecutor’s Office will initiate an investigation,” stated the PGR in a response sent to Lusa.
