The Madeira budget includes six of the 15 amendment proposals from IL.

In a statement, Gonçalo Maia Camelo described the outcome as a “result that, while not sufficient to transform the document, represents tangible improvement in priority areas for the Region and reflects the real political impact of IL’s actions.”

The representative mentioned that the integrated proposals pertain to three essential pillars as viewed by IL: “enhancing efficiency and control over public spending to promote a more rigorous and responsible management of public resources; addressing the housing crisis through involvement of social and private sectors and reevaluation of public properties; and the enhancement of Madeira’s Free Trade Zone, accompanied by measures that encourage diversification of the regional economy, bolstering the Region’s attractiveness and competitiveness.”

According to Gonçalo Maia Camelo, these measures represent “concrete benefits for Madeira and its residents,” highlighting that the party “is fulfilling its role of constructive and responsible opposition by proposing and advocating for useful measures for the Region’s future.”

Regarding the accepted proposals, he mentioned the “adoption of regulations to ensure timely payments to suppliers of goods and services,” aiming to ensure that the regional public administration adheres to legal deadlines in its commercial transactions.

“This is not our budget, but it is a budget that now aligns more closely with what we advocate,” the deputy emphasized.

The IL representative stated that he participated in the Budget and Investment Plan debate at the Madeira Legislative Assembly, “presenting useful proposals, engaging in serious dialogue, and positively influencing public policies serving the people of Madeira.”

“The Liberal Initiative does not block on principle, but it also does not issue blank checks,” he stressed, assuring that the party “will not cease to monitor the Regional Government’s actions or stop working to ensure that the next budget goes further — with more ambition, more freedom, more transparency, and more results for Madeira.”

Opposition parties indicated they would submit a total of 70 amendments to the Regional Budget 2025.

The Budget proposals (2.533 billion euros) and the Investment Plan (1.044 billion euros) for 2025 were approved in general terms with the favorable votes of the PSD/CDS-PP majority and the abstention of the entire opposition.

This week saw the general debate, with the final global vote on the documents taking place this afternoon in the Madeira parliament.
