“The choice of the new governor of the BdP did not surprise me. He was one of several names considered. [Álvaro Santos Pereira] has two decisive requirements to be the governor of the BdP: independence and international recognition,” said Luis Marques Mendes.
The presidential candidate further noted that the new BdP governor was part of a government about 11 years ago, serving as a minister, and highlighted that he was more of a technician than a politician.
“He is a person with significant international recognition, both academically and as a leader at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). With these qualifications, we can only wish him well,” emphasized Luis Marques Mendes.
Economist Álvaro Santos Pereira was chosen today as the governor of the Bank of Portugal (BdP), succeeding Mário Centeno.
The decision was made during today’s meeting of the Council of Ministers and announced at the conclusion, in a press conference, by the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, António Leitão Amaro.
Álvaro Santos Pereira served as Minister of Economy and Employment from 2011 to 2013 in Pedro Passos Coelho’s government (PSD/CDS-PP) and is currently the chief economist at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
