The motion of condolence for the death of Corporal Pedro Nuno Marques Manata e Silva was presented by Chega and unanimously approved in today’s plenary session of parliament.
“Corporal Pedro Nuno Marques Manata e Silva, aged 50, dedicated his life to public service and the defense of national borders, being part of one of the country’s highest risk and operational demand units, fulfilling his duty with courage, honor, and a profound sense of mission in fighting crime and serving the nation’s and citizens’ security,” the approved text highlights.
The death of this military officer, according to the same text, “represents a tremendous loss for the National Republican Guard and for Portugal” and symbolizes “the sacrifice of all men and women who, in the name of the law, face extreme dangers daily in the defense of territory and public order.”
“The officer lost his life after the GNR vessel he was on was rammed by a high-speed boat used by drug traffickers, during a night chase triggered by an alert regarding the presence of a suspicious high-speed boat,” it further states.
This accident also resulted in three GNR injuries, and the suspects are being pursued by Portuguese and Spanish security forces.
On October 28, the morning following the accident, the Minister of Internal Administration vowed that the Government would do everything to apprehend those responsible in the pursuit of a speedboat involved in “drug trafficking.”
Maria Lúcia Amaral made a statement to journalists in parliament, minutes before the start of the second and final day of general debate on the State Budget proposal for 2026.
“Last night, a military officer of the National Republican Guard (GNR) died in service while pursuing a speedboat on the Guadiana River, which, as such boats usually do, was involved in all illicit substance and human trafficking, in this case, drug trafficking,” stated the minister.
Maria Lúcia Amaral made a commitment “to the family, to the National Republican Guard who are in mourning, and to the entire country.”
