
“It’s so surreal,” said the 15-year-old during his acceptance speech. “Tonight proves that if you listen, focus, and step out of your comfort zone, you can achieve anything in life.”
Cooper was awarded Best Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for his role as Jamie Miller during a night of victories for the Netflix production.
‘Adolescence’ was named Best Limited Series, earning Stephen Graham the trophy for Best Actor in the category, as well as awards for Best Writing, Best Supporting Actress for Erin Doherty, and Best Directing for Philip Barantini.
“Things like this don’t happen to kids like me,” said Stephen Graham, recalling his origins far from the glitz of Hollywood. “Being here today is the most humbling thing I can imagine in life.”
The dominance of ‘Adolescence’ was interrupted by Cristin Milioti, who won Best Actress in a Limited Series for her role in ‘The Penguin’. The actress delivered one of the most emotional and enthusiastic acceptance speeches of the night, stating that “making sense of the world right now is hard” and inhabiting her character “was like flying.”
In the coveted drama series category, ‘The Pitt’ emerged victorious. Not only was it considered the best series of the year, but it also earned Noah Wyle his first Emmy after multiple nominations dating back to his days on ‘E.R.’
“What a dream this has been,” declared the actor, who saw his return to medical dramas pay off. Additionally, actress Katherine LaNasa was recognized with the Emmy for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Dana Evans in the series.
“My entire career I wanted to work for John Wells,” she stated, referring to the executive producer. “Thank you to all the nurses who inspired me,” she added.
The other two categories went to ‘Severance’, now in its second season. Britt Lower received the Best Actress award in a drama series, and Tramell Tillman won Best Supporting Actor, delivering a speech aimed at inspiring fellow actors. ‘The White Lotus’ was the major loser of the night, leaving empty-handed.
Still in drama, the Best Writing award was given to the Disney+ Star Wars series ‘Andor’ for the episode from the second and final season, ‘Welcome to the Rebellion’. Dan Gilroy thanked the series’ fans, who “made a story about fighting against impossible odds possible.”
In comedy, Apple TV+’s new series ‘The Studio’ surpassed major competitors ‘Hacks’ and ‘The Bear’: it was named Best Comedy Series, earned Seth Rogen his first Emmy for Best Actor, and won both Best Directing and Best Writing awards.
However, Jean Smart returned as Best Actress in a Comedy Series for ‘Hacks’, and Hannah Einbinder won her first Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in the same series. In accepting the award, the actress made one of the night’s few political statements, criticizing the U.S. immigration agency ICE and calling to ‘free Palestine.’
Broadcast by CBS, the ceremony honored host Stephen Colbert for his “talk show” program, which the network had decided to cancel. Colbert joked at the start of the evening, asking if anyone was hiring, and upon receiving the award, he thanked CBS for the opportunity to be on air for so many years.
The 77th edition of the Television Academy Awards took place early this morning, late afternoon in Los Angeles, at the Peacock Theater in downtown.
