The Secretary-General of the Socialist Party (PS), José Luís Carneiro, visited Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa on the morning of Wednesday, December 3, at the São João Hospital in Porto, where the President of the Republic underwent emergency surgery for an incarcerated hernia.
Upon leaving the visit, Carneiro highlighted that “everyone is already familiar with the President’s energy.” “He is an extraordinary person, full of strength, eager to reconnect with people and maintain dialogue with institutions. He is a source of inspiration for all of us,” he remarked.
Regarding the gift he brought—a book titled “Religious History of the Historical Center of Porto” by Vítor Teixeira—José Luís Carneiro revealed that Marcelo “was surprised” since he was unaware of its release and “very pleased.”
When asked about the topics they discussed during the visit, the socialist mentioned it was “basically about his recovery,” recalling “some memories they share from when he was Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities” and they talked “obviously” about the country’s political life, as he also came representing “all socialists.”
José Luís Carneiro had already spoken to journalists upon entering São João, before visiting Marcelo. At that time, he described not only the gift he was presenting to the President of the Republic but also recalled some moments he had shared with him.
