The municipal council of Sines, located in the Setúbal district, announced that the socialist mayor will temporarily suspend his mandate starting Monday until May 18, the date of the legislative elections.
The statement noted, “The president will be replaced by the next citizen on the respective list, namely councilor Fernando Ramos, who will assume the role of vice-president in replacing [Nuno Mascarenhas].”
A source from the municipality indicated that during this period from Monday until May 18, Fernando Ramos will lead the municipality as vice-president, taking on the responsibilities of the president along with his existing duties.
Nuno Mascarenhas, currently serving his third and final term as the Mayor of Sines, is listed as the eighth candidate for the Socialist Party in the Setúbal electoral circle for the legislative elections.
“The suspension of the mandate is temporary and is carried out according to the provisions of Article 9 of Law No. 14/79, dated May 16, in its current form, being a legal obligation,” explained the municipality.
The PS list for the upcoming legislative elections in the Setúbal electoral circle is led by the party’s current national secretary, António Mendonça Mendes.
If not elected, as the statement outlined, “Nuno Mascarenhas will return to his role as Mayor of Sines on May 19,” the day following the legislative elections.
The early legislative elections are scheduled for May 18, following a political crisis that resulted in the resignation of the AD Government, after their motion of confidence was rejected in parliament.
