The price of this food soared this week and is already the ‘champion’ of the year.

The price of broccoli has surged in the last week, making it the item with the largest percentage increase since the beginning of the year, according to DECO PROTeste’s weekly price monitoring.

“In just one week, between August 13 and 20, the price of broccoli rose by 59 cents per kilogram (an increase of 17 percent). A kilogram of this vegetable can now cost 4.14 euros,” stated the consumer protection organization.

“With this week’s increase, broccoli is now the product in DECO PROTeste’s food basket with the largest percentage price increase since the first week of the year.”

Calculations show that “between January 1 and August 20, the price of broccoli increased by 1.35 euros per kilogram (up 48 percent),” noting that “on January 1, a kilogram of broccoli cost 2.79 euros.”

The Price of the Food Basket Eased Despite All

Despite this, the price of the food basket monitored by DECO PROTeste witnessed a decrease in the last week, following two consecutive weeks of rises:

“This week, on August 20, it cost 241.30 euros, 3.01 euros less (a reduction of 1.23%) compared to the previous week. Nevertheless, this is still one of the highest prices since the consumer protection organization began monitoring the price of this essential goods basket,” the statement notes.

In addition, “at the beginning of this year, on January 1, the food basket cost 5.13 euros less (a reduction of 2.17 percent). In January 2022, when DECO PROTeste started this analysis, consumers spent 53.60 euros less (a reduction of 28.55%) to purchase exactly the same food products.”

Which Products Increased the Most?

In the last week, between August 13 and 20, “besides broccoli, the products that saw the largest percentage price increases were curly lettuce (up 8%), canned tuna in oil (up 8%), and crustless sliced bread (up 6 percent).”

“When comparing this week’s prices to those of the first week of the year, on January 1, 2025, the largest percentage price increases were observed, besides broccoli, in products such as ground roasted coffee (up 36%), eggs (up 28%), and oranges (up 24 percent),” the report adds.

Since DECO PROTeste began this analysis on January 5, 2022, the largest percentage increases were seen in beef for boiling (up 91%), eggs (up 81%), and ground roasted coffee (up 73 percent).

It is noteworthy that since January 2022, DECO PROTeste has been tracking the prices of essential food items, analyzing the total cost of a basket every Wednesday based on prices collected the previous day from major supermarkets with online stores.
