The price went up and the USA is trying to get them, but “there won’t be a shortage of eggs” here.

The price of eggs has surged since the beginning of the year, with inquiries from the United States to purchase them from Portugal. However, the sector assures that there will be no shortage of eggs in supermarkets, particularly as Easter approaches.

“Eggs in Portugal, except in rare cases, have never been scarce. Obviously, we have sufficient production for the country, and while peak consumption can be slightly affected, such as during Easter, there will not be a shortage,” stated Manuel Sobreiro, a representative of a company responsible for more than a third of the national egg production, in comments to TVI.

“There will be no shortage of eggs, consumers can rest assured,” he concluded, noting that there has been an increase in production.

Nonetheless, “we do not have the availability” to meet the demand from other countries, notably the USA: “For a month now, we have sensed this demand from the USA,” both from companies and the embassy. This demand results from a decline in international production due to avian influenza, affecting both Europe and the USA.

Regarding the increases, “the prices have risen around 20% this year,” and “it is not expected to increase much more.”

The price of eggs has surged since the start of the year by approximately 27%, becoming the fastest-growing item in the food basket tracked by DECO PROteste. Eggs have increased by 44 cents, with a half-dozen now costing 2.05 euros.

“In just three weeks, the price of a half-dozen eggs increased by 43 cents (up 26.08%), from 1.62 euros to 2.05 euros. At the beginning of 2025, the same pack cost 1.61 euros, a price that remained stable until February 5, when it increased by just 1 cent,” explained the consumer protection organization.

On March 12, however, “the price of this product rose more significantly to 1.70 euros (up 4.6%).”

With a further increase of 35 cents (up 21%) on March 26, a half-dozen eggs can now cost 2.05 euros.
